Interphase is the stage between two cell division. The daughter cells formed grow and doubles the amount of DNA during this phase. In G1 phase of the interphase the daughter cells grows and protein synthesis for replication occurs. The daughter cell will have 12 chromosomes and 12 chromatids during this stage. During S-phase the chromosomes are replicated. Each chromosomes will now have two sister chromatids. Thus the DNA is doubled. It will still have 12 chromosomes, but have 24 chromatids. During G2 phase, the proteins required for mitosis are produced.

So even if the cell remains diploid, the chromosomes are replicated to form two sister chromatid to facilitate cell division.
