Read the case below closely. As you read this case, imagine you are a Supreme Court justice analyzing the case.

Case B

Two middle school students often wear clothing with slogans like “Vegan All Day, Every Day, “The Moo Moo is a No No,” and “Be Cool, Be Vegan.” The students believe that consuming any animal products, like meat and milk, is bad for health and bad for the environment. They began a campaign to convince all the students in the school to bring lunch from home instead of eating school lunch. Each day greater numbers of students brought their lunch to school and wore pro-vegan clothing. The school suspended the students who began the campaign against the school lunches. School officials said it was a disruption to the school, because food was wasted and cafeteria workers had less to do. The students' parents complained, saying their students have the right to express their ideas and opinions through their clothing and actions. They brought the case to court on the students' behalf. The students' parents lost the case in state district court and so appealed it to their state court of appeals. There they won the case, but the school board appealed the decision to their state-level supreme court. The state supreme court found in favor of the school board. The students and their parents are now appealing the state supreme court's decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Answers

Answer 1

1. This case is about two middle school students who think that ingesting animal products, such as meat or milk, is harmful to the environment and your health. They begin by encouraging children to start packing their own lunches rather than purchasing school lunches.

What is Tinker v. Des Moines case?

In the Tinker v. Des Moines case, a group of 16-year-old students met at the home of Christopher Eckhardt in December 1965 to make plans. They decided to fast on both Christmas Day and New Year's Eve in addition to wearing black armbands throughout the holiday season to show support for a cease-fire in the Vietnam War. The school's principal came up with a policy on December 14th after learning about this scheme, stating that wearing the armband would result in an automatic suspension.

Under the first amendment, public school students are allowed to talk, compose essays, petition administrators, and create groups to further their causes. In addition, the first amendment formerly said that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, prohibiting the free exercise thereof, abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or limiting the right of the people to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Therefore, I believe that the only circumstances in which children shouldn't be permitted to wear something to school are those in which it is either dangerous or extremely distracting. This is because the first amendment makes no mention of the right to wear anything that is potentially harmful to others or that could divert attention from learning.

In the famous 1927 case of Buck v. Bell, the U.S. Supreme Court supported the validity of forced sterilisation of people with intellectual disabilities. Carrie Buck, a young lady who was institutionalised and sterilised as part of Virginia's eugenics programme, which intended to stop the reproduction of "unfit" people, was the core of the case. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. penned the court's decision, which stated that "It is better for all the world, if society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind, instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or to let them starve for their imbecility." Which of following questions arose after slavery was ended in 1865? (choose all that apply)

-the question of basic civil rights
-the economic role of freed slaves

Answers

After the end of Slavery in 1865 the basic questions that arose were regarding the basic civil rights of slaves, their integration into the society and the role of economy in the freedom of slaves. All the options are correct.

From the time of its creation in 1776 until 1865, the legal institution of human chattel slavery—which included the enslavement of mostly Africans and African Americans—was common in the United States of America, mainly in the South. Throughout the period of European colonisation in the Americas, slavery was created.

It was used beginning in 1526 in what would become Britain's colonies, notably the Thirteen Colonies that would later become the United States. An enslaved individual was regarded by the law as property that might be purchased, sold, or given away. Up to its abolition, slavery persisted in roughly half of the US states. Much of the economic and social functions of slavery were carried out through segregation, sharecropping, and convict leasing in the decades following the end of Reconstruction.
