Read this excerpt from Paragraph 1 of the speech. You have taken me prisoner with all my warriors. I am much grieved, for I expected, if I did not defeat you, to hold out much longer, and give you more trouble before I surrendered. I tried hard to bring you into ambush, but your last general understands Indian fighting. How does Black Hawk use rhetoric to advance his purpose in this excerpt? A. He uses direct address to clearly identify and engage his audience. B. He uses sensory details to help his audience picture the ambush. C. He uses a reference to demonstrate that experts agree with his surrender. D. He uses an allusion to recall the actions of the audience's last general.

Answers

Answer 1

The most like option to how Black Hawk use rhetoric to advance his purpose is A. Black Hawk uses direct address to clearly identify and engage his audience.

What is the reason why direct address is the most likely option?

In this excerpt, Black Hawk uses rhetoric to advance his purpose by using direct address to clearly identify and engage his audience. He directly addresses the group who has taken him prisoner, acknowledging that they are the ones he is speaking to, and expressing his disappointment in the outcome of the conflict. By using this direct address, he draws attention to his current position as a prisoner and his own perceived weakness in surrendering.

While the passage mentions the general's understanding of Indian fighting, there is no explicit reference to any experts agreeing with Black Hawk's decision to surrender. Nor does the passage contain sensory details to help the audience picture the ambush, or an allusion to the audience's last general.

You can begin your speech with a question that will grab the audience's attention, something related to waking up early on Saturday. For instance, "Why on Earth would anyone want to wake up early on a Saturday?" You can follow that question up with another one that will reveal the purpose of your speech, such as "But what if I told you that waking up early on a Saturday could change your entire future life?"

From that point on, explain the advantages of attending Saturday lessons. Explain how learning happens in a more relaxed environment, how kids have the change to deepen their knowledge, how students with problems in certain areas have an extra change to have their doubts answered, and so on.

Which sentence best summarizes the author's point of view about the Pemberley Museum?
A. Visiting the museum is a disappointing experience, especially when compared to its former glory.
B. Going to the museum is disappointing because it is too large to see everything in one day.
C. A trip to the museum is frustrating, and it is not worth the current price of admission.

I remember loving the Pemberley Museum as a kid, but my recent visit was very different. Multiple expansions over the years and the haphazard relocation of exhibits have left the museum terribly laid out. I spent half my visit wandering the halls trying to find the ocean exhibit, which the map indicated was on the fourth floor when it was actually located on the second. Updated signs and directions would be extremely helpful.
The museum used to be world class, but it feels pretty dingy these days. Several lights were out, making the fossils hard to see. In fact, the whole place has a run-down feel, with a lot of information out-of-date and most of the interactive elements broken.

How did the immigrant experience help shape the American Dream? Is the American Dream a fantasy – or is it true that everyone can make it in America? Explain.

Answers

Explanation:

The immigrant experience has certainly helped to shape the American Dream. Immigrants are often seen as a symbol of the idea of upending the status quo, of rising up in a new land and overcoming the odds. Their stories of struggle, perseverance, and ultimately success, have become part of the fabric of the American Dream. The idea that anyone, regardless of their background, can make it in America is very much a part of the American Dream.

That said, the American Dream is not a guarantee of success for everyone. It is an ideal, a concept, and it is up to individuals to work hard and make the most of their opportunities. Even with the promise of the American Dream, immigrants and all other Americans must work hard and make sacrifices in order to achieve their goals. The American Dream is not a fantasy, but it is not a guarantee either. It is an ideal that can be realized through hard work, dedication, and a willingness to take risks.

If a sample of a material has a mass of 21 g and a volume of 2 ml, could it be one of the substances listed in the table? Explain.

Answers

It is important to note that other materials with similar densities could also be possibilities, and additional tests or information would be needed to confirm the identity of the material.

What is Volume?

Generally, Volume is the measure of the amount of space an object occupies. It is typically measured in cubic units, such as cubic meters or cubic centimeters. Volume is an important characteristic for many shapes, including cubes, rectangular prisms, spheres, pyramids, and cones.

To determine if the sample of the material could be one of the substances listed in the table, we need to calculate the density of the material using the formula:

Density = mass/volume

Density of the material = 21 g/2 ml = 10.5 g/ml

Comparing this value to the densities of the substances listed in the table, we can see that the density of the sample matches the density of silver. Therefore, it is possible that the material in the sample is silver.

The phrase "weakening of British morale" suggests a decline in the spirits, motivation, or confidence of the British people, which could result from various factors such as military setbacks, shortages, or political tensions. The word "general" indicates that this decline was widespread, rather than isolated to a particular group or region.

The phrase "corresponding effect on neutral nations and subjugated peoples" suggests that this decline in morale among the British people could have negative consequences for other countries. The word "corresponding" indicates that there is a cause-and-effect relationship between the decline in British morale and the effect on other nations and peoples. The word "neutral" suggests countries that were not directly involved in the conflict, while "subjugated peoples" suggests those living under the control of other powers, possibly referring to colonies or occupied territories.

Overall, "a general weakening of British morale with a corresponding effect on neutral nations and subjugated peoples" means that the decline in the spirits, motivation, or confidence of the British people had wider consequences beyond the UK, affecting both neutral countries and those that were under the control of other powers.

Explanation: The phrase "a general weakening of British morale with a corresponding effect on neutral nations and subjugated peoples" refers to the concern that the American government had about the impact of Britain's struggles in the Middle East on other nations. The idea is that if the British appeared to be losing morale and struggling, it could have a negative effect on neutral nations and those that were already subjugated under Axis powers. Essentially, the concern was that Britain's struggles could cause a domino effect that would weaken the resolve of other nations fighting against the Axis powers, making it harder to win the war.

Down and Dirty: Do Men and Women Perceive Cleanliness Differently?
© 2012 Gregory McNamee—December 5, 2012

Anyone who is fastidious about washing hands, avoiding grime, and keeping a neat immediate environment would probably want to keep a safe distance from my office, which is a chaos of slopped coffee, teetering piles of books and papers, dust, and assorted flotsam and jetsam.

I now have a defense for this studied disorder: namely, my chromosome count. In a study published in the online scientific journal PLoS ONE, researchers from San Diego State University and the University of Arizona examined 450 samples of bacteria taken from offices in New York City, San Francisco, and Tucson. These bacteria—and forgive the ickiness—came mostly from the skin, nose and mouth, and the digestive tract, and they were found mostly on chairs and telephones, with lower concentrations on computer keyboards and mice and on [physical] desktops.

The researchers' findings were various, but one of them was this: In the workspaces of men, the bacteria count was significantly higher than in those of women. The implications are immediately obvious: Men are, well, just not as tidy as women. Remarks an authority cited in the study, "Humans move through a sea of microbial life that is seldom perceived except in the context of potential disease and decay." If that is so, then men, it would appear, are enthusiastic body surfers while women barely dip their toes into the mess.

It is dangerous, always, to generalize on grounds of gender and sex. Yet there does appear to be significant variation between men and women in some categories of perception; reports a recent paper in the suggestively titled journal Biology of Sex Differences, women are superior to men in discriminating among fine distinctions of color, while males are better able to discern details in any given viewscape from a distance. This finding supports the so-called hunter-gatherer hypothesis, which proposes that certain biological adaptations occurred as a result of different divided-labor roles in human prehistory. Since men were better at spotting things from afar, they hunted, and since women were better at distinguishing colors, they chose which mushrooms to eat—they gathered, in other words, and apparently they developed the ability to discern dirt where men could not.

It seems to me, of course, that it is possible that those biological differences preceded the roles, that function followed form. But no matter: I'm busily scanning the horizon for gazelles, and therefore I can be forgiven for the chaos immediately before me.
