Gift-giving is an ancient tradition that became linked with the Christian holiday of Christmas.
Gift giving may have occurred in ancient Rome near the solstice in December, which was honored during the Saturnalia holiday.
Exchanging gifts dates back to the Roman era, when the ancient Romans would swap luxuriant branches on January 1st as a wish for wealth and abundance.
Titus Tatius, according to mythology, began this ritual 700 years B.C. He was the Sabine monarch and afterwards co-ruled the Empire of Rome with Romulus.
Titus Tatius is reported to have ordered his followers to offer him a laurel or olive branch from the sacred forests of the Goddess Strenia every New Year.
